Why Edmonton Tap Water Leaves So Much Scale

If you live in Edmonton, St. Albert, or Sherwood Park and you have noticed a white crusty buildup around your taps, on your kettle element, or across your glass shower door, you are not imagining it and you are not doing anything wrong. The water here is genuinely hard.

Edmonton's municipal water comes primarily from the North Saskatchewan River. By the time it reaches your tap it carries dissolved calcium and magnesium minerals. When the water evaporates, those minerals do not go with it. They stay behind as a chalky white or grey deposit. The more water splashes and evaporates in a spot, the thicker the scale gets. A tap that drips slightly can build up a visible crust in a couple of weeks. A shower door that does not get squeegeed after every use looks frosted within a month.

What Scale Actually Does to Your Fixtures

Scale is not just cosmetic. Calcium deposits inside a kettle reduce heating efficiency and can flake into your drinks. On a tap aerator, buildup restricts flow and eventually blocks it. On glass, if scale is left too long, the minerals etch into the surface and become much harder to remove without specialist polishing. The window to deal with it easily is shorter than most people think, usually a few weeks to a couple of months depending on water use.

Safe Removal: What Works and What Damages Fixtures

White Vinegar for Taps and Aerators

Plain white vinegar is mildly acidic and dissolves calcium carbonate without scratching. For a tap or showerhead, soak a cloth in undiluted white vinegar and wrap it around the fitting. Secure it with a rubber band and leave it for one to two hours. For aerators, unscrew them, drop them into a small cup of vinegar, and soak for the same period. Rinse, then buff dry with a microfibre cloth.

One important note: do not use vinegar on natural stone, brass fixtures with a lacquered finish, or gold-plated fittings. The acid strips protective coatings and can pit soft metals. If your tap has a brushed brass or unlacquered finish, dilute the vinegar 50/50 with water and reduce the soak time to 20 minutes.

Glass Shower Doors

Mix equal parts white vinegar and dish soap in a spray bottle. Spray the door, leave it for 15 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch nylon pad using circular motions. Rinse with warm water and immediately squeegee from top to bottom. Buff the remaining moisture with a dry microfibre cloth.

If the scale has been sitting for months and the surface feels rough to the touch, the minerals may have begun etching the glass. At that stage, a paste made from baking soda and a small amount of dish soap, worked in with a nylon pad, gives a little more abrasive action without scratching. Steel wool, scouring pads, and abrasive cream cleaners will scratch glass permanently. Do not use them.

Kettles

Fill the kettle halfway with equal parts white vinegar and water. Boil it, then let it sit for 30 minutes. Pour it out, rinse twice with fresh water, and boil a full kettle of plain water before you use it for drinks. That removes any vinegar taste. If the element is heavily scaled, repeat the process once more.

Chrome and Stainless Fixtures

After removing scale with vinegar, applying a thin layer of car wax or a dedicated chrome sealant to the fixture slows redepositing significantly. The minerals have nothing to grip. Preventing Scale from Coming Back

• Squeegee glass shower doors after every shower. Thirty seconds of effort prevents an hour of scrubbing later.
• Dry taps and sink surrounds with a cloth after use, especially in bathrooms that do not get much airflow.
• Run an exhaust fan during and after showers to pull humid air out of the room before it condenses and evaporates on surfaces.
• Consider a whole-home water softener if you find yourself descaling every few weeks. The upfront cost pays back in fixture longevity and less cleaning time.
